Girls In Action Day at the YWCA of Brooklyn Posted: 28 Oct 2004 11:54 AM |
On Thursday, November 11, 2004 from noon to 4:00pm, the YWCA of Brooklyn’s Young Women’s Leadership Academy will host “Girls in Action Day” a free afternoon of sports activities for girls, ages 8 to 18 to coincide with the school break. “Obviously, sports help to promote health and fitness but it also develops empowering teamwork and leadership skills that can prepare girls for successful futures. We are delighted to provide this event to young girls in our community,” said YWCA of Brooklyn Executive Director, Barbara J. Turk.
Girls will participate in introductory sessions in basketball, yoga, self-defense, circuit training, volleyball and swimming. In addition, the day will also include a guest visit from the New York Dazzle, of the Women’s Professional Football League. Established in 1999, WPFL has developed into a structured league that boasts 14 teams nationwide. Team players from Dazzle will introduce the girls to women’s football and provide an information session on women in sports. The day will conclude with refreshments and a raffle. Advance registration is required and registration forms are available at the YWCA or by calling (718) 875-1190 ext. 250.
The Young Women’s Leadership Academy has been generously funded by the Rose and Sherle Wagner Foundation, State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Con Edison and the Community Resource Exchange. Support for Girls in Action Day has been received from Fresh Direct, Gap Inc. the New York Aquarium, Urban Bush Women, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
Founded in 1888, the YWCA of Brooklyn has a long tradition of working to build strong and healthy communities with a particular focus on gender equality and racial justice and serves over 8,500 women, men and children each year.
